Journaling to Keep your Mind Active!

Taking good care of your brain as you get older is absolutely essential, and there are many different activities in which you can partake in order to give your mind a good workout. One specific activity that is very popular among seniors is journaling! Read on to learn more about what journaling can do to keep your mind healthy.

Journaling for Seniors

By journaling, you can work to keep your mind as sharp as your pencil! Journaling is a simple and effective way to combat memory loss as you age. There are many ways you can choose to use your journal, including…

keeping track of your daily routine. You can go the old-fashioned route with your journal and use it as a way to “recap” your day, taking note of the things you did and the people you saw. This keeps your short term memory active, which is what a lot of people seem to have the hardest time keeping.

recalling important events from your past. There is no rule that says you have to journal about the present! You can also use your journal to recall stories and events from your past that stand out to you and that you would like to preserve in writing. It is important for your family to understand a little about who you are and where you come from. By journaling important dates and events in your life you leave a family tree and history of your life.

recording advice for your children and grandchildren. A journal filled with the wisdom and lessons you have learned over the course of your life can make for a truly special keepsake to pass on to your children and grandchildren one day.

planning future trips or outings. Your journal can help you organize your thoughts when it comes to planning for an outing of any kind; you can write down all of the things that you would like to do and see and this can serve as a kind of “checklist” for you.

Journaling, in addition to being a good way to keep your mind sharp and combat memory loss, is also a fun hobby to pursue!

If you are not one who enjoys writing, there are alternative methods for journaling; you can type on a typewriter, computer, or tablet, or use a speaking program where you can just tell your stories and it is recorded for you, either in written word or on a video. Having video of you telling your stories can also be a great way to share your memories and give a keepsake to your family to have forever. You can also enlist the help of your friends, family, or a care giver to record your memories.
